Yeah, reading that whopper from Nate Silver made me realise that it would appear the vast majority of media influencers–even the ones theoretically “on our side”–are now in “normalise fascism” mode, where the idea that the American political system should have any breaks from other strong-President models is rejected entirely.

One of the things about the format for Last Week Tonight that lets it outdo even Daily Show is the fact that it doesn’t try to cover everything at once. It takes on a topic and deep dives, along with a secondary topic that doesn’t get quite the same amount of time, but still gets more than the brief ‘breaking news’ glance ‘real news’ gets. Not to mention one of the things this show, Daily Show, etc. get to do is use juxtaposition and video evidence to demonstrate why something is so wrong or absurd, making it easier to absorb than just an infodump.

Maddow does the same thing in general without the overt humor: it takes a topic and expands on it with little break until the topic is as fully explored as could be in the time allotted. It’s often the point of criticism against her too, that she supposedly takes 30 minutes to explain what could be explained in 3, or the like.

You’re basically asking to be roundly mocked when the whole story comes out and it bears little to no resemblance to his self-indulgent BS.

It’s not simply that they’re trying to drum up outrage for their buddy, the guy that they feel comfortable sharing cocktails with and saying “Yes, Mr. Trump” to. It’s the way they’re acting like a bunch of snotty children, responding to palpable outrage not with reasoned arguments in favor of Trump’s “accomplishment,” but instead insulting anyone who thinks it’s wrong to criticize Trump at all. The “civility” crowd are simply fueling the fire by responding to incivility with outright hostility.

The answer’s pretty simple: Once Donny’s leaves office, Joe and Mika want to able to attend his parties again. While there is the question of “access” here, there’s also the reality that Joe and Mika see Trump as their “friend” and want to be able to go back to that relationship once he’s no longer in the spotlight of politics. It’s pretty significant that the Beltway cocktail crowd are the ones quickest to clutch their pearls at “incivility” directed at Donny.

Yep as opposed to Trump’s guests who include GOP leadership who have been in Washington for years. If your AG is Bill fucking Barr, you don’t get to complain about a swamp. You ARE the swamp.
Here’s the thing: Obama didn’t need to make his balls feel big by describing events that he did not personally witness or constantly use “we” to describe the actions of the men he trusted to carry out the raid. Or talk up the significance of the raid by suggesting that it was bigger than any prior president’s accomplishment or that his predecessor had failed at the task. He gave a short, concise statement that conveyed the significance of the event without turning it into a grotesque end zone dance.
By the way, will we ever hear Charlie and his fellow chucklefucks clutch their pearls over how Donny’s description of the raid and efforts to get video footage of such out will “endanger” those soldiers who took part in it? All signs point to “FUCK NO!”

What we know is that Pelosi knows how to count votes, and that’s what matters. She’s got the votes to get this done and take impeachment to the next step, and it undercuts a significant argument by Trumpworld and GOPers about the process.

The same pundits demanding a vote will now question it. That’s par for the course.
What we know is that Pelosi knows how to count votes, and that’s what matters. She’s got the votes to get this done and take impeachment to the next step, and it undercuts a significant argument by Trumpworld and GOPers about the process.
Of course, the GOP will caterwaul anyways, because that’s what they do.
I expect Friday to be the earliest we’ll see a flood of subpoenas from Donny’s goons in the House looking to slam the brakes on impeachment by turning it into a circus. I personally expect one of the first ones to be for Hunter Biden, in the hopes that dragging him before the nation will embarrass Dems into abandoning impeachment.

Obama also called GWB before making his speech about getting Bin Laden; he felt his predecessor (even after closing the Bin Laden unit at CIA) deserved to hear about it before everyone else.

I’m not sure. I can tell you this much. My brother has two dogs for his business. His daughter loves the dogs but they’re different than the dogs I‘be had growing over the years. They’re constantly searching. I imagine a military dog would be the same way. I’m glad Trump doesn’t have a dog. The only Trump that I could give a benefit of a doubt as a possible pet owner is maybe Barron but I don’t know what kind of kid he is. Kids typically like animals but Barron’s own father hates dogs after all which as a lifelong dog owner actually find disturbing.

The dog is a stand-in for the soldier whose injury or death he was ready to exploit as a result of the raid. There’s no hospital visit or eulogy to milk for sympathy points, so he’s left trying to present an injured dog as the face of this valiant raid that he totally deserves all the credit for.

Trump has displayed the personality type over and over of someone whose main concern for his own children is not of any sort of “normal” version of love, but only that of them as vessels in which to carry on his own legacy and family name when he is gone. It’s closer to a smart answer, which would be something along the lines of:
The House and Senate each have constitutionally mandated duties. House leadership sees this as the best way to carry out those duties. That’s their prerogative and as a Senator, I don’t feel like it is appropriate for me to weigh in on their actions, anymore than it would be appropriate for a member of the House to weigh in on Senate proceedings.

They’re basically going to take a shit on centuries of common law and decades of precedent in US criminal law to argue that since Trump’s lawyers weren’t involved in the equivalent of a grand jury proceeding, then it’s “illegitimate” because they didn’t get to ask questions or call their own witnesses. They often target immigrants, who are likely to be both more fearful of potential “enforcement actions” and less savvy about the scam.
re: #221 goddamnedfrank
A local business asked some scammers to stop spoofing their number as the originating phone number because it was affecting their business. The reported scammer response was a “F**K You” and heavier use of the spoofed number of that business.
I usually don’t respond for two reasons.
First, because they would then have my number and are already untroubled with the concept of using it for whatever purposes they want.
Second, because now they then know that the number is a live number. And they can sell it to other scammers as such.
As always, ymmv.

Interesting! Perhaps a local Chinese crime group thinks your number is associated with a Chinese ethnic. Is it a relatively new number?
There was a series of home invasions locally. Turned out they were done by a local Vietnamese ethnic gang and perpetrated against other Vietnamese ethnic families.

I’ve had my 805 area code number for 14 years and recently these calls have been pretty common on the West Coast. They just target communities with higher than average immigrant populations for reasons that Eclectic Cyborg stated. The Chinese are favorites because there are enough of them here to make the scam profitable and the mainland government is credibly corrupt and oppressive.

Nancy Pelosi’s Impeachment Letter Suggests Sh*t Is Getting Real, Constitution-Wise
more Charlie Pierce
Shit continues to get real, Constitution-wise. From Politico:
The resolution — which “establishes the procedure for hearings,” according to a statement by Speaker Nancy Pelosi — will mark the first floor vote on impeachment since Democrats formally launched their inquiry a month ago.
“We are taking this step to eliminate any doubt as to whether the Trump Administration may withhold documents, prevent witness testimony, disregard duly authorized subpoenas, or continue obstructing the House of Representatives,” Pelosi said in a letter to Democrats obtained by POLITICO.This is the way it works. The more votes they take, and the more procedures and details they authorize, impeachment moves inexorably away from having been merely something people talked about to a real part of the daily business of the House of Representatives and, as such, a real part of the daily work of the Congress as well, as though recommending the removal of the president* is just another bit of legislative business.
re: #232 retired cynic
edited to clarify the quote
One point I remember reading about these scams is that many scammers try to be a little ridiculous in their ‘pitch’.
The goal is to filter out competent and knowledgeable people who, basically from the scammers viewpoint, would waste the scammers time by seeing through the scam.
The scammers really only want to spend their time with those more likely to be fooled.
edit: clean up sentence wording by removing a ‘could’ that was followed by ‘would’.

Now you have me thinking about the old dumber than sayings. I worked with a few nco’s and an O3 who had extensive lists of these. Such as:
“An intellect rivaled only by garden tools.”
And of course, the supposed OER (Annual performance report for officers):
“His men would follow him anywhere. But only out of curiosity.”
A few of the details from Trump’s al-Baghdadi presser were wrong. Many of the rest were either highly classified or tactically sensitive, and their disclosure by Trump made intelligence and military officials cringe, according to current and ex-officials.https://t.co/3o6o7j8fai
— Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) October 28, 2019
By Courtney Kube and Carol E. Lee
IRBIL, Iraq — President Donald Trump painted a vivid picture for the world of the deadly U.S. military raid on ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, a raid that only a small number of people witnessed in real time.
A “beautiful” and “talented” dog got injured. A robot had been on standby to aid in the hunt for al-Baghdadi if needed. U.S. Special Operations Forces arrived in eight helicopters and were on the ground for about two hours. They entered al-Baghdadi’s compound within seconds by blowing holes in the side of the wall. They chased al-Baghdadi into a web of underground tunnels — many of them dead ends — that they already knew existed. Before the U.S. forces left for the 70-minute, “very low and very, very fast” helicopter ride back along the same route from which they arrived, they captured some of al-Baghdadi’s henchmen and seized “highly sensitive material and information” outlining the origin of ISIS and plans for future plots.
A few of those colorful details were wrong. Many of the rest were either highly classified or tactically sensitive, and their disclosure by the president made intelligence and military officials cringe, according to current and former U.S. officials.
The al-Baghdadi raid is the most high-profile exhibit of a reality U.S. officials have had to contend with since Trump took office: a president with a background in show business who relishes delivering a compelling narrative and deals daily with the kind of covert, life-and-death sets of facts that inspire movie scripts….
“Our discourse simply can’t process the kind of massively asymmetric lawlessness we’re seeing from #Trump and his defenders right now, in a way that renders the truth about it faithfully.⁰“This will have serious consequences.”
Sure will.

Ghost Nets Haunt the World’s Oceans, Hunting Beyond the Grave
Getting our rubbish out of the oceans is a major problem! There are some people who have the job of retrieving lost or discarded fishing nets. Unfortunately, they can’t go very deep yet. Some of these nets weigh tons. One came ashore on Hawaii that weighed 40 tons!
